My name is Cassie. I’m the owner, artist, and designer for See Cassie Make LLC. Thank you for your interest in the Bow Ties for Loss project. I collect bow tie quilt block from quilters and assemble quilts from them. Creating a tangible thing to give back to families that have lost a child tragically.
In November of 2019 there was a tragic accident that happened by me. A boy from the local middle school was hit by a bus on his way home from school and he did not make it. The thought of losing a child to something like this pulled at my heart. I kept putting myself in the shoes of the family and I could not fathom how I would react, what I would do or feel. I felt the need to do something, ANYTHING for that family. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know them. I pulled back and thought about who I am and what I could possibly do. I am a quilter, a sewer, an organizer. That is what I’m good at, so I used those things. I picked a quilt block that even a beginner could sew if they wanted to, as long as it had clear directions.
I added those directions and put a call out to the sewing and quilting community online in the form of a free pattern. I received an amazing response to my call for quilt blocks and more. Donations started pouring in from all over the world in the form of quilt blocks, batting, backing fabric, and money.
More recently I have had offers from local long arm quilters donating their time and machines. I began piecing together the first quilt top.
My goal with the Bow Ties for Loss project is to bring comfort to families who are grieving the loss of a child taken suddenly and tragically. I want to surround them with love from around the world, to help support them during their time of grief and healing. I want them to have both comfort and hope for the future from a whole community of people pulling together for them. I see Bow Ties for Loss growing and being able to donate many quilts each year. For now, I’m taking things one quilt at a time.
